Hi everyone!
I created a tutorial on how you can set up and configure OpenVPN on a Raspberry Pi that I wanted to share:
Video Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLmbgJe1rEU
Written Instructions: https://www.wundertech.net/openvpn-raspberry-pi-setup-instructions/
Thank you for checking out the tutorial. If you have any feedback or tutorial requests, they would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for sharing this, as it’s very informative for an OpenVPN newbie such as myself. At the moment I’m running using my Asus RT-N66U running Merlin firmware as an OpenVPN server however, that firmware hasn’t been updated in more than two years so does pose a security risk. I do plan on eventually using either a Pi Zero (direct Ethernet) or a Pi 4 (at the other end of a Powerline connection) as an OpenVPN server.
Update: Subscribed to your YouTube channel.
Got a setup guide for shuttling IPv6 traffic over OpenVPN?
hey, thanks for the tutorial! So, to access my openvpn server from internet, would it be enough to port forwarding 1194? Thanks…
Thanks so much! If you do set it up and you have any questions, let me know and I will do my best to help troubleshoot!
I do not, but I will add this to my list of future tutorials! I haven’t played around much with IPv6 for really anything network related as I use IPv4 internally, but I should look deeper in to IPv6. Thanks for the suggestion, and if you have any others, please let me know!
Yes! UDP port 1194 and you should be good. Thanks for checking out the tutorial and if you need any help, let me know!
Thanks for the answer! With your help, i have managed to set up a working OpenVPN server on an Ubuntu PC and clients can connect from internet without any problems. But when they connect from internet they cant see devices within the local network. Do you know if there are extra steps to take for letting clients to access devices within the network, like rasberry pi s, etc. Thanks!
When you say on the local network, do you mean on the network where the VPN server is set up or the local network of the device trying to connect?
By default, you should be able to see the local network. You might not have DNS working, however, which might make it look like you can’t access any devices on the local network. Can you try and connect by IP address and see if that works?
Let me know and we can continue troubleshooting!
