So I can’t quite figure out how to use a VPN with EPB. Can someone shed some light on how I can go about getting one setup? TIA
If you want ALL your network traffic going through a VPN, many modern routers support OpenVPN, so whatever router you buy just make sure it has that. I use a TP-Link with EPB and it has OpenVPN which is what you need for Nord, etc. Amazon.com: TP-Link WiFi 6 Router AX1800 Smart WiFi Router (Archer AX20) – 802.11ax Router, Dual Band Gigabit Router, Parental Controls, Long Range Coverage : Electronics
If you just are using a VPN on your personal computer, you just follow the instructions of the VPN provider you’re using.
If you are using rented equipment, good luck. Most routers support VPNs. Your VPN provider should have a walk through on the help section. I know before I used NordVPN and they had one in their help section and asus did as well
What exactly are you trying to do? If you’re just trying to connect one computer to an external VPN there shouldn’t be any issues. Are you trying to route all traffic through it? Incoming VPN?
I have epb and use express vpn. Never had any issues
caution to anyone doing this - you won’t be able to push anywhere near full gig speeds via any VPN.
If you really need VPN for any activities it’s best to keep those activities via the VPN and normal high bandwidth use activities outside of the vpn.
Thanks for the advice! Can I set this up thru my iPhone or does it have to be thru a computer?
I want the vpn on all of my devices simultaneously. Phone, iPad, PS5 ETC
How do you set it up? Do you use their rented router?
What VPN are you using?
You need a router that supports it.
Yes it’s the one they provided me. I only use it on my pc not my phone or anything though
Could you point me in the direction of a good router that be suited for this?
Ah I gotcha, I’m mainly trying to get it on my PS5. I’m guessing I’ll have to buy a router that has a built in VPN
I believe you are looking for a “VPN router”. I think this is where the router itself opens the VPN connection to the VPN service and all devices on the network would be “protected”.
Just understand… this will degrade performance. No clue how much, but there will be some loss.
Just out of curiosity, why do you want to do this?
Keep in mind that a number of sites (Netflix, for example) block traffic from VPNs. If you have VPN router you’ll need to do without these sites or let them through the VPN, which, based on your initial question, may be challenging for you.
Sorry, you’ll have to do your own research to find something that matches your needs.
Just want additional privacy and security. Thanks for the advice!
A VPN just shifts the visibility of your traffic to someone else, it doesn’t necessarily give you more privacy and security. There are cases where that’s true (i.e. public wifi), but at home on EPB isn’t one. Without a VPN, EPB would be able to see your traffic. With a VPN, that VPN provider becomes the one that can see it. In my opinion, I’d prefer that EPB be the ones to see what I’m doing over some random VPN provider that’s probably snooping and selling data.
