If a VPN with “No Logs” policy has a server on a country with “Must keep logs” laws, does the VPN need to keep logs when I connect to their server on that country?
It’s better to assume they DO keep logs.
What I mean is that, if a VPN service is based on a country with no “keep logs” law, but it has different servers on countries where its law says “logs must be kept”, does the VPN service need to keep the logs of people that connect to their servers on said countries?
Well if a VPN company has servers on those countries then I don’t really trust em, like Russia by law wants access to VPN servers so torguard and PIA among others pulled out. That tells me they take security/privacy very seriously.
Have you tried contacting their support?
Doesn’t matter, don’t use a vpn for anonymity use it for relative privacy. You want anonymity use TOR
Laws trump policies. International treaties trump laws.
It is recommended to avoid such VPN!
I personally prefer to use a VPN which out-side of such countries.
depends on vpn company.
Depends on the server provider that tne VPN uses. All VPNs with USA server locations log activity, maybe not the VPN company but the ISP powering the VPN servers certainly does - best to assume logs are kept
It does depend on the company. Some will argue that, because they’re not incorporated in a “must-keep-logs” country that they don’t have to keep logs. Some don’t. Like the other person said though, it’s best to assume that they do (if the no-logging policy is important for your privacy or safety.)
Which countries, for example? The UK has laws about mandatory logging but they only apply to ISPs. I’m sure places like China and maybe Russia there’s specific laws about VPNs but in Western counties politicians seem clueless enough about them that they fly under the radar in terms of legislation.
Not with a double-hop. It’s all I use. And I can stream movies just fine so speed not a concern as I don’t download huge files.
But on what? How can I know?
Nope. PIA has been court ordered multiple times for logs. They don’t have logs. They can’t tell anything. Now, you are saying the ISP of the VPNhas logs. Okay. They have a log of someone accessing that data using the VPN. They have no way to trace it back to your IP address. So, really, what do they have? I mean, they have a huge list of things that were done illegally and legally from the VPNs servers. There really isn’t any way to take that along with the VPN logins and connect the two if the VPN doesn’t keep logs.
Please, don’t share that misleading article.
Misleading much.
Adding on that if the VPN doesn’t own the baremetal server in that country, chances are that whoever does is keeping logs in this scenario, even if the VPN isn’t incorporated in it.
TOR 3 different people you go through, VPN 1 person you go through. I know which sounds better.
How do you know the vpn is trustworthy
If you’re going to comment, you might want to read up on Tor.
