Is it good to use VPN with Tails?

Per Tails webpage, recommends not to use VPN with tails. Is it safe without VPN? Or should i set proxy? Any suggestions?

They are telling you not to use a VPN because tails is a privacy based Linux distro and vpns are not exactly what most people think they are they almost give a false sense of security. A VPN is great for ensuring that important data makes it to its destination a VPN is not necessarily there to keep your identity a secret.

It really depends on what you’re doing while on tails if you need / want a VPN.

The only suggestion I have is not tails specific.

Think about what you’re doing and why you would want a vpn.

Do you want to bypass region blocks?

Trying to hide activity from isp?

Sure go for it but use something like proton vpn or something that isn’t selling your data or handing it out on your governments demand.

Okay so…

Firstly. Tails is a privacy based os. Inside of tails a user can run the tails browser which will utilize tor networking to allow for obfuscated browser traffic via the tor network.

The tor network by itself has some inherent protection but with a growing number of exit nodes becoming compromised in addition to infiltration from unsaid agencies… the tor network may be somewhat insecure

Now a vpn on top of the tails browser allows for an additional layer of security and/or safty depending on how you look at things.

The use of a vpn allows a users traffic to be funneled thru a server which causes a distribution of traffic across various owned networks. The rub is often these network ip ranges are known for each vpn. So they do offer some level of obfuscation… but limited as such.

The danger of use is enhirently tied to the level of risk envelope which encompasses the behaviors associated to actual browsing of the web.

It depends on what you are doing… one must guage the risk…

Using tails for access to websites or services will help hide certain aspects from your isp. However the isp can still see the traffic is running into a tor network. Access to some of tors hidden services can however attract attention or even cause further investigation because of one reason or another.

When accessing hidden tor services like onion an individual should always stack obfuscation methods.

Note: a vpn will add the ability to route traffic in a more effective manner with regards to privacy but does not offer a magic pill for hiding ones behaviors. This holds true with regards to tor networks as well. Yes it does provide some protection however nothing in this world is absolute.

I would recommend to use TOR Bridges rather than a VPN.

Hi, how can I do torrenting. Is there a way other than using vpns. Please share if any. Because I have learnt tutorial shared in torrents and want to give back to community by torrenting them back. But sometimes I hear the isp etc ,it scares me. Thanks

Just a beginner at Tails. My intention to learn more on hacking tools and join forum if any in meantime not be victim for any hackers

Why does the status of the hardware matter?

Isn’t the network going to be the weak point? I mean tails takes care of most serial identifications right?

These questions from someone who has not used tails and only known tails info from college textbooks and reddit posts
