Is it still safe to use US VPNs?
We (company) try to avoid and internet/cloud service, hosted in the US. Our IT department regards the US, China, North Jorea and some third world countries as insecure.
No VPN is 100% safe and the provider could be based on the moon and it wouldn’t change that. It’s pretty clear that the US is willing to hack anyone and they don’t care what country the person is from. If you do something bad enough to get the attention of the United States (I’m sure it’s the same with any country). Simply using a VPN isn’t going to save you, no matter the country the VPN provider paid to have their provider based in or the location of the server. If you only want to torrent and browse porn like most users. I would say it’s as safe as a provider in any other country if properly set up.
it’s not “safe” to use windows 10, let alone any 14-eyes based vpn,
as long as idiot politicians will blame encrypted apps for terrorism.
while you never hear usa cops blaming murder on gun availability.
For pirating, sure. For something really illegal, probably not.
Common or garden VPNs are fine for avoiding filters, disrupting tracking. Will not stop gov.anywhere.
I think unless there is a crackdown on the VPN’s it is safe to go, for instance the government of U.A.E has banned the use of VPN’s quite long before and anyone found using it is liable to pay a fine and some prison term as well if i am not wrong. Means they do track it down.
We are safe as long as the governments decide to put the vpn down on their hit list.
i personally wouldn’t trust a us based vpn.
I just want to know one thing: I don’t do bad stuff, but I don’t want ISPs collecting, selling my data. Will a VPN 100% stop them? And is there such a thing as a router I can buy that is basically a VPN?
I do not think that VPNs are really safe. Even if you utilize VPN, no one can guarantee you total anonymity and security. How can you choose a trustworthy VPN provider, reveal all data that you want to hide? There are many recommendations on the web (e.g. https://www.bestvpnrating.com/vpnrating/who-are-safest-vpn-service-providers-world), but are they really helpful? As for me, the term “privacy” does not exist now. All info you’ve exchanged, all websites you’ve ever visited can be detected by a third party and utilized in malicious goals. Anyway, if you deal with the reliable VPN provider (based within or outside the US), the risk being hacked and had personal info stolen still exists.
It’s safe to not use a VPN, I doubt anyone is going to beat down your door and have a 1v1 in the latrine with you…
Haha… But for real… Idk depends on “your threat model”
If you’re a typical user just surfing the web I would say yes.
Why not just host your own VPN service?
Illegal activity should only be conducted on a live OS such as tails, or a sandbox os us as Qubes, using public wifi with a VPN connected to non-fourteen eyes country over TOR. Of course, I assume the illegal activity is due to an oppressive regime of some sort.
Yeah I think it’s important to keep in mind with the US bill that passed, is that US based VPNs are still just subject to the same overall risks that allll of them are. If the NSA or any other international agency reaaaally wants to check in on you, they can, but the bill that was passed essentially just allows ISPs to monitor everything and sell/manipulate whatever based on what they can surmise about you…(still very messed up)…but with this in mind the basic purpose of an VPN remains intact, it blocks your activity from your ISP, so with no activity your ISP can’t build a profile on you, sell your shit, etc, etc. Obviously there’s a hell of a lot more to consider, but specifically concerning the US and the bill that passed, you’re still givin’ the big ol’ middle finger to your ISP and saying, fine asshole, you get nothing, enjoying looking at me being connected to an ISP and nothing else (for now)
I use a VPN egressing the US since I don’t want to give my ISP and my government easy access to my information. If you’re in the US that obviously wouldn’t do.
I use Tor when I don’t want to give anyone easy access to my information.
Sooooo… Switzerland?
It depends. Russia will not rat you out to the US. Or vice versa.
Here is a bit of an odd one for you, I bought my own modem and plugged it in at my then new place and it just works. I don’t pay Kabletown and it has been working for over a year now. I know ToS is terrible, but I’m not well off and fucking hate Kabletown.
Is there any benefit for me to get a VPN, particularly if my data is presumably not linked to an ISP account? I see that my online fingerprint is visible and they would be able to ID me based on service logins if they cared to, but is there something else I am not seeing?
Also, any idea why the modem is working? I tested it elsewhere without an active connection and it works there too (when an identical modem did not).
Gun availability and murder have yet to be proved. A person who wants to kill someone will always find a way.
You’ve peaked my interest.
