I recently shut down my Mysterium VPN node after hearing about some VPN operators being raided in the EU. Now I’m wondering what kind of logs, if any, I should keep or delete to protect myself and others.
I didn’t keep extensive logs during the time it was running, but I want to ensure that I’m in compliance with any legal requirements while also maintaining the privacy of those who used my node. What kind of data (e.g., connection logs, timestamps, IPs, etc.) should I have on hand in case authorities request it, and what would be considered overkill or risky to hold on to?
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who’s run a similar setup or has experience with VPN/legal matters. My priority is staying on the right side of the law while keeping users’ privacy intact.
I’m in your same position… I had the node running VPN and Public (by my mistake because I didn’t know what it meant) for 6 days up until the knowledge og the arrests. The node now is off.
Now I’m trying to understand how to better prepare myself in case someone did anything illegal with my bandwidth and where to get those logs (I’m not that expert on these kind of things).
Is there a way to know what law enforcers needs so i can keep it or even anticipate them by calling and explain the situation before it even (could) happen?
I just shut down my nodes the hassle is too high for the reward. I also prefer taking the risk of running a Tor Bridge or Tor Relay (everything except exit relay) and contribute to society (avoid censorship etc) instead of trying to make money off a very stagnant network.
I wonder if we are the only 2 worrying of going to prison or if the majority of the people doesn’t know that those arrest even happened…
Also, how much time does the Staff need before assessing the problem?
I’ve ran nodes on Android devices, in docker containers and some windows machines… Turned everything down but as I’ve uninstalled them I’m worried about the lost of logs that could help me in case of troubles. Any way we could pull those back from our account at all?
I honestly have no idea… I have 0 knowledge of IT stuff of this sort, I just downloaded the node because I thought it was a good project, with good intentions, and also in the download process there was no information about the risks and what is recommended to turn on/off.
You have to do it actively in the blog, but as i recall in the process there was no indication of the risks…
I too unistalled it, but there still is the node folders in my local pc, i’m keeping it in case of need, you should check too.
