Nord VPN suggested for everything and everyone: simply the best
Setapp includes ClearVPN thats is great
ExpressVPN. Never let me down. Excellent customer service.
Second on proton vpn. I use it on windows, Mac, iOS, Linux, docker and my wife used it on android. I also use wireguard / cloud flair but that is to hit my home network remotely.
This one is perfect for everyday use like streaming. The UI on iPhone is perfect. On my Mac it sometimes gets messed up and I wish it could be a real window instead of the menu bar because it glitches out pretty often.
I use VPNs for two use cases:
-
To watch streaming video not available in my country
-
To access local network resources (either for work, or to get access to a few things at home) when I’m outside of the office/home. It’s a lot easier to completely lock down the network and just administer the VPN than to manage multiple services with access to the outside world.
-
Just thought of a third. To remotely use services that by design only work on a LAN (like things that UDP or other non-routable protocols). We used this a lot during Covid to enable remote video production.
I can’t think of any valid uses off the top of my head.
Interesting! I will look at it. I was just checking as well as saw these posts. Apparently, it’s a common question. Thanks!

I just wasted 3.5 mins of my life. Thanks for x2 speed it wasn’t 7 mins.
Since my home firewall is setup as a ZeroTier gateway, I also benefit from my ad filtering that inside at home while I’m on the go.
I have raspberry pi running pi hole and I set it as my DNS server in my router to block ads. however I’m interested as setting it as gateway to also block ads on the go. how can I do that with zerotier?
I have had this for ages. It has served me well. Using on Mac, Windows, and IOS.
NordVPN was hacked recently. I would never install any software from them.
clearvpn is from macpaw. i’ve read they’re not good with their user’s data. they also made gemini 1 & 2 and cleanmymac, etc.
ExpressVPN was bought by KAPE, a former Malware Distributor.
For uses cases 2 and 3 Tailscale is awesome (and free for personal use)
Which VPN did you find easiest for streaming video not available in your country? I want to watch stuff from the UK
This. Take my upvote.
The only reason you’d need a VPN is to access things that are not available in your country, that’s about it, the security angle is negligible these days with most things being end-to-end encrypted regardless.
So to add to this, in the ZT client you can set a gateway and DNS IP, so you’d configure your client to the IP of your ZT bridge node.
Yeah it’s really not bad: speedtest on iOS just now
I honestly don’t understand why it’s rated poorly over and over.
