I think this might be the ultimate answer to netflix unblocking. There’s a project in development called mysterium that aims to be a decentralized VPN network, where everyone can sell their own bandwidth and others can use that for VPN purposes. Because it won’t be static servers used for the VPN, it will probably be close to impossible for netflix to ban. Many of the nodes might very well be legitimate netflix users using the connection for their own viewing too, how could they ban those IPs in that case?
You might ask, how is this different from f.ex Tor, or Hola? In those cases the users hosting the VPN nodes don’t get paid, so few choose to do it, and thus the quality of the network is poor, and it’s easier for netflix to find and ban the exit nodes. But in mysterium I imagine a lot of people will contribute, because who doesn’t want to earn a little extra on the side, without doing anything other than lending out their bandwidth when they aren’t using it?
And that’s another thing. The price is set by the nodes lending out their bandwidth. These nodes are in competition with each other, because if their price is too high, the users will just use a different node. And there is no overhead, there is no company behind it all that takes a cut. Therefore it is expected that the overall price to use the VPN is vastly better than any commercial VPN provider out there. And you only pay for what you use. Very good news if you think current VPN solutions are too expensive.
