NordVPN and their onion over VPN service

This does allow access to the deep web with chrome. I’m wondering is it a tried and true method? New to this so sorry if this is brief or not enough info.

You don’t access it through Chrome. You still need to use TOR.

A VPN provider could force all traffic egressing a VPN termination point to then go through Tor (much like the iptables rules / anonabox setups one sees) and Nord explicitly state that any browser can be used;

Usually, the Onion network can only be accessed with the Onion browser, while with NordVPN’s Onion Over VPN servers you don’t need to download it.

All you need to do is connect to an Onion Over VPN server, and NordVPN will take care of the rest.

As to Op, deep web != dark web (etc etc), if you wish to access .onion’s you should use the Tor Browser Bundle.

VPNs are not necessary when using Tor.

VPNs are not necessary when using Tor.

this is not true, once you’re connecting to tor your ISP is aware of that and in many places this is a valid reason to mask that fact by connecting to a VPN first.

Whether or not your ISP knowing you use Tor matters depends greatly on your location. In most first world countries nobody particularly cares if you’re using Tor, and the countries that do ban Tor will likely be upset at you for using a VPN too.

Not true. Even I’m so called “first world” countries authorities are interested in users connecting to tor. I don’t know how much you know about this issue and what countries you’re talking about but I would strongly recommend to whoever is reading this to always go through some sort of proxy or a VPN before connecting to Tor.

When I said “nobody particularly cares if you’re using Tor” what I meant was that nobody would come knock on your door and demand access to your computer or anything of that nature. It’s true that the NSA will start scooping up all your packets for further inspection if you’re noticed using Tor, but the same is true if you’re using a consumer VPN or a public proxy.

Can you explain to me exactly what benefits you believe that using a VPN over Tor would have in a country that won’t straight up raid you for using Tor? I’m still open to having my mind changed.
