Once I arrived in Florida, I reset the box & let the system upgrade continue, everything worked as it should as I was in the right region. I’m just worried that my other boxes backing Canada may at sometime need an update, I will be leaving this one in Florida
when I return to Canada, I will power on the other Onn boxes and let them sit for a few weeks to see if they talk to the mother ship for an update, then I can try some of the solutions offered.

Tried doing initial setup the following ways:
Running Express VPN on Android phone and then hotspotting and trying to connect both the phone running setup and the box to the Android hotspot. Forget about it, it just doesn’t work.
Tried Windows hotspot with VPN running, doesn’t work, forget about it.
My current router from 2017 doesn’t do VPN, lazy to buy one. Called my local shop who set up ExpressVPN on one of their routers. Brought the box to the shop and did initial setup over a VPN to Minnesota for both the phone running the setup and of course the box. I kept location services turned off for the initial setup.
$13 service fee from the shop for this 35 minute procedure, love sensible pricing here in Bali.
After that it runs on my Indonesian internet connection at home without VPN. Also turned on location services, no problem.
I have a 2019 65-in Sony Bravia. The display is still beautiful but the processor, network capabilities, RAM, storage, version of Android, version of Android TV versus Google TV and even the clunky infrared remote were all begging to be replaced.
Imagine trying to function with a 6-year-old Android phone… Luckily we can cheaply conduct a massive upgrade on these TVs with these external boxes.
Huge improvements in all of those areas now with this upgrade, and I’m also getting 250 megabit via Wi-Fi AC to the box, was getting max 100 megabit via Wi-Fi before using the box.
Just roll into a shop who can set up a VPN to America for you just for the initial setup and you’ll be done and dusted in 45 minutes.
So the the VPN method works for me. It’s only required for the initial setup.
Set it up in Florida then take it home to Canada and use a VPN with US location
You can bypass geo-blocks by changing your IP address to the location where the website or the app you want to access is available. The most effective methods of overcoming geo-restrictions are:
Using a VPN service
Connect through a free web proxy
Using Tor Browser
Relying on Smart DNS
I’m screwed…so I’m in Trinidad and Tobago and I bought the Onn and got the region lock…what can I do …is there a way to put a custom ROM?
just do the setup in the US and once its done never update again and use a custom launcher instead of the default launcher the box comes with
they should at least allow Canada and Mexico as they share land borders and people go back and forth and buy stuff like this regularly. People do not look at boxes with small prints they just expect stuff to work.
I got mine a few months ago and even after update it works fine but they may block it anytime!
Geo-IP gets around that easily. They dont need you to give permission, they just need your IP to contact their server which then runs a geo-trace on it. No amount of denying permissions will stop that.
Location services are for times when an app specifically asks to use the built-in features for locating the device.
Thank you for the advice. Out of the 5 that I bought in Florida, this is the only one that has been updated & locked, so I’m only down by $20 USD. I got these to replace my fire TV sticks which will either go in the bin or sold via the marketplace. I’ve done a full reset so some poor sod can have them for a few $$.

Thanks, I did review these, just not sure which one is really worth it or in fact actually works without too much hassle! I checked the box it came in & the document inside the box, I don’t see anything about regions, Puerto Rico or anywhere else.

Use the windows VPN trip using a hotspot, apparently that has a very high success rate. I tried using the VPN in a hotspot on my cell phone but it did not work and I do not have a Windows PC so I need to find one and try this out as well
I’m going to Florida next week, I’m going to reset the onn I have, that way when I go back to Ontario it should work ok, well that’s what I believe based on the discussions
Interesting, my FIL has starlink, they are a 2 hr drive away but if the other boxes I have start the update, I can pop over & use their network for a few minutes.
