ONN 4K Streaming Box, Region Issue

I bought 5 of the Onn android boxes while in Florida earlier this year. I have been using 3 of them since we returned back to Canada with no issues. After seeing the posts re region blocking, I unpacked the last two & the 1st Onn box setup ok, no issues. The 2nd Onn box stated that an security patch was required, a whopping 749Mb which seems a little large, there was no option to defer the install, so I continued, after the reboot, It stated that I was in an unsupported region. I will take the blocked one back down to Florida in a few weeks & either use it there or return it back to Walmart for a refund

My concern is what if the other 3 get the update pushed & I am unable to defer the patch, plus a couple of my wife’s family bought 5 each while in Florida & they also live in Canada

The update only bricks new activation devices or factory reset. Old devices can upgrade without any problems.

Try to use US VPN on router then you can get through activation screen.

Hope this helps

The region block is only active during set up for now. So once it’s set up, you’re good. At least for now, until they decide to change it. We need a custom ROM for these now

Thank God I saw this coz I was looking for an android tv box and I am eyeing ONN coz it’s cheap. I guess, I am gonna stick with Mi Box S

Apparently you are ok if it updates, the region locking only matters during initial setup or after a factory reset. I have four Onn 4K pros and am in Toronto. I did the setup for a brand new one last Monday and it worked so I may have just got in under the deadline.

But it may be better to just stick with other devices, like the Google streamer or Chromecast with Google TV as they are officially supported in Canada.

I’m surprised they are blocking Canada. Most the reports were for outside NA

Did you get the Pro or non Pro?

I have a couple 2023 brand new in box still. Was going to whip one out to test this new region lock for Canada but sounds like you beat me to it

Why can’t you just turn off location services ??

Maybe try connecting your phone to a US VPN (for example, Proton VPN - it’s free, you don’t even need an account), then connect the onn to your phone hotspot. Not 100% sure if it would work but it should. That’s probably what I’d try to do if I was in your situation. Seems like less work than trying to set up a VPN on your router as others have suggested.

I know the Walmart page explicitly says that it’s region locked to the US & Puerto Rico (I mean, Puerto Rico is part of the US so that’s a little redundant imo - or does it not work in other US territories outside of the 50 states + PR perhaps?) but this is a sh*tty business practice by Walmart, Google, or whoever’s idea it was to do this, especially when they’re just regular Android TV/Google TV devices that can sideload any apk, not just specific region apps, and aren’t like Roku where you can download apps only from the Roku app store. But they are probably subsidized by someone though, as Chat GPT estimates the production cost to be $18 – $29 per unit for the onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box (2023), so they’re breaking even on them, if at all considering the $20 price point. I’m betting on Google or one or more of the streaming providers on the buttons on the bottom of the remote. So if people use them in another region and don’t use the services of the subsidizer, the subsidizer doesn’t get their return. Not that I agree with this practice, but that’s the justification for the region lock probably.

Read the solution part

The large 749mb update was the one that changed the device from a bootloader unlockable and rootable device into a locked device that can’t be rooted. They sent a full update for that one. Before that update and since, the updates were smaller delta incremental updates. The unlockable versions are desired by some users. People try to buy the unlockable versions based on the date code on the package.

Get a VPN router from Walmart, set up your boxes, then return the router. If Canadian Walmarts are anything like US you have like a month to return it. Maybe have your relatives send you theirs to set them all up in a batch.

Were you able to solve it?

Is there any option to set it up offline without internet just like android phones?

did anyone tried to put a vpn on a cellphone and use this cellphone as a modem (sharing internet) to connect the onn box to see if it bypass the activation?

Para resolver el problema vas a necesitar una VPN, activar el hostpot en el computador y configurar tu adaptador de red, dejo el link de la solución, saludos.

You can bypass this message by using a VPN, link :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Tried to set up the ONN 4K in Mexico today, no go. Geo blocked. I’m from Canada so I guess this goes in the garbage.

I’m curious if anyone in Canada who also has Starlink tried setting up the device successfully as Starlink Internet has US IP.

I got the box from Amazon US last week. Setup is easy, just choose other regions and use internet connection that have VPN to US. I used it for PS5 remote play.
