I have LAN access open in my vpn app so I can interact with my printer and some other home devices. That’s not a major risk when I’m home using my own network.
However, what happens when I log into a public wifi whilst still using my VPN? What can they see on my device and could anyone interact with my device in any way?
That switch simply blocks off lan traffic from your device to other devices.
If you leave it on people will be able to communicate with your device, see your mac, port scan it. They are in the same network as yours after all.
Configure your firewall properly and you shouldn’t have any issues.

Within the VPN app, I would turn the LAN access feature off when running on any network other than the home one. Just allow access when you want to use the printer at home, or even easier, just turn the VPN off when you want local access.
There might even be a way to whitelist your home network.
That’s what I thought. I’m using Android devices exclusively and there’s no way to configure the firewall as the vpn slot is already in use. Any workaround?
I honestly don’t think the stock android firewall config allows for much to be done to your device by someone in the same network.
You can get a terminal emulator and try UFW.
