Softether VPN - Clients Outside Local Network won't connect

Hey all, I’m struggling to get softether VPN to work outside my local network. My home computer is the server host. When I try to connect from different wifi, it is unable to find my server. I created a DDNS hostname, but this didn’t work. My hypothesis is that this has to do with Dynamic DNS, but would love to hear from others. The issue is finding my local network. I had no issues doing this in open VPN.

Please let me know thoughts or possible solutions. Thanks all

Did you port forward so its accessible on the internet

So like the noob I am I forwarded the wrong port haha it’s up and working now thanks all, super helpful and informative!

Yes I did both in Softether and on firewall

Well I’d it works within your LAN you have a firewall problem.

Also why not stick to openvpn or WireGuard softether is sucky

Tell me more, open vpn is super simple, but the speeds are pretty sucky for me. Might be cause I’m using my Asus router as the server for open vpn.

if you’re using a router to do anything server related you’re gonna have a sucky time period theyre very underpowered for what they do.

Worst case you should port forward the vpn port to a server/raspberry pi behind the router to do the processing and achieve higher speeds

I was thinking of upgrading but I’ve see people do the raspberry pi method. I mean some new routers are quad core with 1.8 boosts, it’s no AMD cpu but hey that’s about the same as a pi haha

1.8ghz arm cores though which suck compared to x86 they have no hardware encryption support so they tend to be slow. Wireguard is better in this respect because it used chacha20 as a cipher which is faster and computes faster on even weak cpus
