Last night, on u/jbark1990 's post about watching the La Casa de Papel, I promised to help people find native, peninsular content that they might be interested in. At this point, I am not bragging when I call myself and “expert”–I’m stating a fact. At this point, I have seen more Spanish
content than any Spaniard. (I’m not bragging. They all tell me I’m insane).
Before we get into the list itself, we need to cover some housekeeping:
To access many of these shows, you will need a VPN and Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, and three important local apps: ATresPlayer, RTVE Play, and MiTele.
I recommend finding everything you can on the local apps for a couple of reasons.
-
Although some of these shows might be available on the larger platforms, we know that those catalogs change all the time. In the local ones that can happen too, but it’s less likely.
-
Watching things through the local apps is going to expose you to similar content that is not available on the global apps.
Now that we have the apps out of the way, we will get to the content recommendations in just a second but let me make one of the recommendation first.
I’m 36. The way that I think of watching local content is trying to "plug myself into my Spanish generation " by watching the shows that I would’ve watched as a teen or young adult from in the country. You can form relationships and better understand the culture impact of the content.

Horror:
This is by no means a complete list… I’m literally working from memory.
Also, keep in mind that even though it looks like I’ve seen more thrillers than anything else they are often times shorter then any other type of continent. Comedies and dramas tend to go on for multiple seasons. Thrillers typically end right away. It’s rare that a thriller gets more than one season.
Thank you. I just finished a series and am having a hard time finding a new one to watch.
Amazing post!
Just one question:
Which were your 3 favorites?
Like you AJsea87, I have watched so many. It’s actually a good idea to create a list with movies / series that the Spanish acquirers could search for. I’ll add a few that I have watched. I imagine you’ve already watched them.
I like the crime/suspense series. I prefer to watch the series because they last longer.
Mar de plastico
El principe
Hierro
Si fueras tú
Ni una mas
Segunda Muerte
Estoy Vivo
Las Cumbres
Caronte
Olmos y robles
Promesas de arena
Elite
The DS guys can watch them if it’s possible for them to do so. I’ve had plenty of listening practice before I joined DS. I put my level at 4, it should be higher really, but I wanted to get a massive amount of hours logged in with watching DS videos and also watching series outside DS.
I just wanted to point that out with the level I put myself at because these series are super advanced. Others at level 4 and even higher might think they’ll understand a good amount but would get frustrated when they find how difficult they are.
I’ll add more to the list when I remember others I’ve watched.
Just another recommendation, if you like thrillers, try La Messias.
Btw did you like Aquí no hay quien viva? Started it a few days ago and it is quite funny.
So, I do not know if there is a geoblocker on this or not–so I don’t want to make a recommendation and have it not work–but…movistar PLUS is 10 euros a month, and there is a massive amount of content, a lot of it is unique to Movistar +. I am in Spain, so I’m not 100% certain than a VPN will work, but my guess is that it will.
If you’re looking for more content, it’s definitely worth checking out.
Thank you so much for the list!!
Do you by any chance remember if any of these series end on a cliffhanger or aren’t finished yet, especially the thrillers and dramas? I’m a bit scared of googling because I don’t want to spoil myself
Wow, thanks so much for this. I’m pretty early in my journey (30 hours). Am I able to watch any of this at this point in my journey?
I’m not at that point yet where I can watch native shows. Probably about 400 hours or so away but saved. Thanks for the info.
Thx for this. Great list. I would also recommend:
El Inocente
La Valla
Gran Hotel
Antidisturbios
If you don’t find something, you love on this list, let me know and we’ll go exploring together. Keep in mind, this doesn’t include anything that isn’t a series and it doesn’t even include all the series that I’ve seen.
What an evil question hahahaha…
- Aquí no hay quien viva
- El tiempo que te doy-> one of the most interesting formats I’ve seen in any show, in any language and a very human portrayal of relationships.
- La caza.
It’s impossible to choose just three. Watching all of Cuéntame was incredible, but it’s hard to put in my top 3 because 23 years is a lot for most people but I got hooked.
Los Serrano and Los Hombres de Paco are really helped me to feel a sense of cultural identity within my generation. References to those three along with cuéntame and ANHQV are all over the place.
Los Herederos de la Tierra is a miniseries and the cast is trunk of the family tree of modern Spanish tv over the last 15 years so it’s really fun for that reason lol.
Paquita Salas is tonally The Office so what’s not to love?
I could keep going…
Thanks! La Messias is on my radar.
ANHQV is ridiculously funny
I’ll check again. I haven’t looked at it in months, but the problem used to be that in ordered register you had to use a DNI, something I don’t have (yet😉).
Most of them are over. There are a few that aren’t, but I think all of those are on Netflix. In other words, as long as you have access to Netflix, you shouldn’t even need to Google.
If there’s anything you are interested in specifically, you can shoot me a message and I’ll tell you where to find it so that you don’t have to risk spoiling yourself
Not even close. Any of this stuff is going to be 750 hours minimum, and even then you will notice that every new series takes a lot of adjustment. New characters, new setting new information, etc. Keep this post saved for when it will be useful to you, but don’t waste your time for now.
