Torrents won't start downloading with vpn running (cyberghost/qbittorrent/utorrent/deluge)

Hello. I recently got a new laptop and downloaded what I usually use, which is qbittorrent. I also use cyberghost vpn. However when I clicked the magnet link on my preferred torrent site, the download would not start. I thought it was strange and had never happened. it says stalled, and 0 seed and 0 leech, and no connections. Infinity symbol for the ETA.

So I got rid of qbittorrent and got Deluge or something like that. Same issue.

Same issue with uTorrent.

So I got the genius idea to click off my VPN, and lo and behold the download started.

How do I get it to connect through my VPN?

First off, read and follow this:

https://support.cyberghostvpn.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001694589-How-to-torrent-anonymously-with-CyberGhost-for-Windows

Secondly, you will need to figure out which port they are forwarding you, and set that port in your torrent client. I have never used cyberghost before so I am not sure if the client shows you forwarded ports or if you have to figure it out yourself.

Random ports aren’t the best way to go. Going to want to set that to static so that way you can actually port forward on your router. To get best options. Another thing is that all that I have read tcp is the preferred method over udp for torrenting, so that’s a setting you should set. Only tips I got to give

The forwarded port won’t stop it from downloading, it’ll just be much less than optimal.

To me, it sounds like there is no connectivity… is the magnet link actually resolving and downloading? Just too many unanswered questions to even guess as to why it isn’t downloading.

Step 1 - go download an actual Linux ISO without the VPN. Step 2 - try to download the same ISO with the VPN. Step 3 - try a torrent from a different tracker.

I have attached a series of screenshots here, https://imgur.com/a/TQKmcPQ , showing what I see, included settings (descriptions underneath each picture). I don’t think I can see the forwarded port but I am new to all this stuff so I could be missing something

It does not seem to connect at all, no. Not with the VPN on. The second I turned it off the file started to download just fine. I added a series of screenshots if it may help explain any better.

Sorry for my inexperience, but what do you mean by Linux ISO? Googling has told me that it’s an image file of some sort, or a copy of a cd/dvd. Not sure exactly what to download.

I’m just saying to try a different source. But the info here says you have no connectivity through CyberGhost. Look thru their troubleshooting notes… It’s likely configuration of their VPN app.
