Hi,
It seems to me that the ProtonVPN servers in Virginia (US-VA) are always heavily used. I know that Northern Virginia has a large population, but I didn’t think it would be as heavily used at it is. Anybody have any ideas why?

My guess is that everyone who’s in the swamp (Washington DC) or near it tends to use a VPN. Maybe a good handful of government workers aren’t trusting the wifi at their work or they probably started blocking apps to be used such as twitter and instagram or whatever while in a government building. Plus most government phones are contracted with AT&T (which is a branch of the government so don’t use them) so using a VPN over data too has become more popular.
I remember back before Wireguard was a thing on Proton, the Ashburn servers weren’t that full. So I think people are catching on that using a VPN is crucial now when at work or school because lately I’ve seen some stories about employers and schools sending notices to people for their activity online. One school near me (I’m not in Virginia) was apparently weaving through the metadata and traffic of specific apps that both the students and teachers/other employees were using. Instead of blocking the apps (maybe it was used for educational purposes) they just sent a notice to people saying they’ve been using instagram, twitter or tiktok for too long and they’ll have cut down their usage or have their personal wifi account suspended. Now many people use VPNs because of that. Could it be a similar case in the DC region? Also with political related reasons where either employees or residents would want to keep their data private to avoid being taken aside and being spoken to. This is my guess based on the stories I heard, it’s probably rampant in the DC swamp area.
I can’t even get it to show up virginia
FanDuel. Basically the same thing. Or PornHub.
