Using VPN without any installations

Is it possible to use VPN using Windows or OS’s built-in settings only without having to install any plug-in or application to your browser or PC respectively?

This would be particularly useful when using administratively restricted systems.

Yes, it is possible to establish VPN connections without additional software with Windows. The question is whether the VPN host supports the protocols that Windows uses out of the box. Generally speaking you’re talking about L2TP with IPSec.

If you are using a VPN service, then you’ll want to ask them if they have instructions on how to connect to their service using Windows, without having to install their VPN client.

If you have your own VPN concentrator/server at work, then you’ll want to get support from the manufacturer/developer on how to configure to support native VPN connections from Windows devices.

So I see you’re trying to use a VPN on a school computer and can’t install anything. I used to do this in highschool using portable putty to ssh to my home PC and then use my own Internet connection.

Here’s what I would do. You need your VPN .ovpn file, a USB stick, and a portable version of open VPN, meaning it doesn’t get installed. Hopefully they didn’t block running .exe files. Put everything on the USB stick.

Unlikely imo. In order for a VPN to control your Network traffic, it needs to add a virtual network adapter on your PC. Also, it needs to make it so that all incoming and outgoing traffic goes through the VPN. Very hard or most likely impossible to do without Admin rights.

use a cheap router and run vpn on it. connect your laptop via wifi.

And how do you do that? Do you have a link?

Hmm, interesting. Good to know, thanks.

Yeah how do you do that?

seach gl.inet routers. these are some good routers with inbuilt vpn functionality. configure your vpn service on it and connect your windows laptop to its wifi.

I will research thank you! :folded_hands:
