I know you need a VPN for downloading content to avoid trouble with your isp but is it the same for streaming? I’ve tried searching around but haven’t found any definitive answer yet.
Streaming is definitely safer, I haven’t heard of people getting in trouble with their ISPs for streaming. But they can see you and could theoretically take action, so a VPN is the only truly safe bet.
Prosecution of streaming is always on the server side. If anyone has ever been prosecuted for viewing a stream, I’ve never heard of such a thing.
I don’t really use stream sites (not necessary for what I like), but I have seen a few of them - all of them were loaded with malware, shitware, hostileware, fuckyouware, rapeyourscreenware, yourbrowserismybitchware, and all kinds of mean, nasty ugly things that belong on the Group W bench.
This is the bigger issue.
The thing to understand is this:
Even with torrents, it’s not the downloading part they focus on in civil suits - it’s the uploading part people do as part of a swarm.
It’s sharing stuff (serving it) through P2P networks, not downloading stuff.
Criminal and especially civil matters are focused on the distribution/serving side.
A VPN, however, never hurts.
If you want to stream geo-ip blocked content (like watching the BBC iPlayer from outside of the UK), then a vpn is a perfect fit.
Otherwise, using a VPN is a good idea. Like how we use curtains in our house for a little more privacy, using a VPN gives you that little needed privacy.
If you are using P2P based streaming services like Popcorn Time or want to access geo-restricted content like different Netflix libraries or BBC iPlayer, VPN is the only way to go.
VPN is less important than Adblock when streaming IMO
i watch my stuff from streaming site, and i do use vpn to be safe. they can see that you watch alot of copyrighted stuff and come after you with all the logs in theory.
Yes. If you are into accessing restricted content and also need a layer of protection, as one of the commentator highlights, there are free sites too, but they are loaded with all sorts of *wares.
Express VPN is the best for downloading or streaming.
Some companies have GEO blocking which doesn’t allow you to stream if your not within your jurisdiction such as your online Pay TV subscriptions. Express VPN was fast enough to work for me when I was overseas for this purpose.
You do NOT need a VPN for streaming. You also don’t need VPN for downloading anything unless you’re doing something bad and trying to make it difficult to trace you (which can be done without any difficulty)
Not necessarily needed, but it can help. I’m wondering myself now if I should be turning it on when streaming - I usually don’t and haven’t had any issues. I guess it varies by ISP/country.
