I used to use protonvpn via their CLI but after updating to 22 the cli is finally dead. Tried following their official Ubuntu installation but the app never opens despite errors. Ready to move onto something else so long as it’s supported and easy to use
Mullvad vpn is the best and it has a deb repo for mint
ProtonVPN over here. I’ve tried them all, literally. Between subs for services like P.I.A and Nord to hosting my own VPNs across different networks like AWS and digital ocean. But tbh, ProtonVPN offers everything they have and more with a sub.
P.I.A…Private Internet Access
ProtonVPN user here… Have you just tried using the built-in Network Manager to set up an OpenVPN connection, instead of trying to get the ProtonVPN client to work?

100% Mullvad VPN. Mainly because of the privacy and the price is also very fair.
Surfshark. Works very well at a fair price and has a neat gui client working on mint.
for free VPN: Proton
for paid: Mullvad
I use the flatapak and free version of Proton VPN
It works great
I mostly use wireguard trough my home network. If i need to go outbound i throw a wireguard setup on a vps.
Some install scripts are running uname
to get system info which is different for Ubuntu and Mint. I usually check that first if some Ubuntu install script fails, it almost always fixes the issue.
Windscribe has a .deb installation file as well as port forwarding for paid version. I have a custom plan costs me $4 USD a month, zero logging, streaming capabilities as well as p2p and wireguard setup.
Definitely worth the price, with my $4 plan I can choose close to 24 or more servers based on region.
None, but Tor if I feel froggy
Personally, Mullvad VPN is my go to when I’m not using my own wire guard server to access my LAN where everything is routed through a PiHole.
Most people have no reason to use a VPN. Most of the Internet now has secure connections and you can also use secure DNS. What’s the point of encrypting things twice and tunneling? If you’re trying to circumvent geo ip restrictions then it makes sense.
The best VPN is going to be one that uses OpenVPN or Wireguard so you can use the native tools in Mint rather than having a special client.
linux? proton, no questions asked, if you have issues, simply ask support, the linux versions, work just fine.
I use ProtonVPN, It runs 24/7 in a Alpine VM on my server for “sailing the seas”.
I don’t use their GUI or CLI app but instead a config file downloaded from them applied to bog standard wireguard. I crafted a kill switch using iptables. I used to oo the same with OpenVPN, but switched as wireguard is considerably lighter on resources. I have squid setup on that VM to provide a proxy, I hop my desktop onto the proxy when I want to connect it through the VPN and hop off for not. very quick transition.
I ran PIA for a long time, there was some FUD about thier buyout but so far I have not heard any concrete negatives from that. its been at lest 5 years now.
I briefly ran Mulvad, I have a high opinion of them, but expensive and no port forwarding, you are limited to thier app.
I get a great deal packaging Prton mail and VPN, I get both for less than the price of Mulvad, to get it cheap I buy it every two years, and re-up when its on sale usually black friday.
i don’t know if you can call it a VPN, but I use Cloudflare WARP
Anything with wireguard. /thread
I use a RackNerd VPS and just host my own. You can get a VPS for $12 per YEAR for their lowest tier if you search for discount codes.
Honestly I’ve switched to just using 3proxy with auth enabled and Fail2Ban setup. It’s a lot more flexible and lower overhead than a VPN.
If you want to use Proton ask ChatGPT to help you troubleshoot. It saves me so much time when I get stuck.
