I used Proton quite extensively in 2024. I mean it’s decent with fast speeds but you can get Nord or Surfshark (which are better in ways imo) in the same price bracket
ProtonVPN’s VPN Accelerator is impressive. Speeds on distant servers were way better than I expected. But streaming is where it loses me. Some Netflix regions worked fine, but I had issues with BBC iPlayer and Hulu. If privacy is your priority, it’s great, but if you want a mix of security + streaming, NordVPN is the better pick
I tried both and would say that NordVPN has a slight advantage on nearby servers (around 5%). Still, I went with Proton as it has way more servers and great performance when connected to remote locations.
They also don’t use RAM servers which makes it even more risky.
I know CyberGhost isn’t really that great, but I thought ExpressVPN was one of the best choices. What happened to it?
Interesting comparison. Have you tried Surfshark’s rotating IP feature? I’m wondering how quickly and conveniently does it switch from server to server. I’m looking for a VPN that will allow me to hop from server to server every 15 minutes. Ideally, this would be something that I could automate.
It ain’t on this list, but I read that IPVanish recently brought their kill switch feature to iOS devices. It’s a really great service and is priced similarly to Surfshark.
That’s why I prefer NordVPN. If you’re an iPhone user, it’s really the best VPN for it, because that built in kill switch really comes in handy.
Thanks for the feedback.
This is the one I’ve used for a while. It is pretty affordable and is based in one of the best privacy jurisdictions.
I might have to check it out, I’ve only been using NordVPN the most.
Nord and Surfshark are probably the best out there. I use Nord because it has specialized servers for obfuscation, torrenting, double VPN, and onion over VPN. Plus, the Meshnet is a breath of fresh air. I haven’t seen any other VPN offer this kind of feature
If you’ve got multiple devices (or share with family), Surfshark is a no-brainer. Unlimited connections mean I can run it on my iPhone, Mac, Firestick, and even my router without worrying about hitting a limit. I did notice occasional hiccups with certain Netflix libraries (Japan was tricky), but overall, it’s super solid for the price
PIA’s best selling point, and this applies to people in the US, is that it has servers in every US state. So you’ll find a nearby server wherever you are in the states
A bit? ExpressVPN is way too overpriced. I mean NordVPN has tons of useful features at a much affordable price
Yeah, they are not special and actually other VPNs on this list will give you a much better speeds for streaming. I use ProtonVPN on my iPhone and couldn’t be more satisfied.
Proton VPN works super fast on my iPhone 14. I’m currently traveling through Europe and use it to connect to a server back in Sydney and stream local TV shows. I was expecting to get a shitty connection, but I didn’t experience any buffering so far.
There are problems with data leakage while using IKEv2/IPsec protocol on macOS and iOS. NordLynx is super fast, although I haven’t compared it with IKEv2 protocol on iOS. I use NordLynx on my Android phone, and it gives me consistently fast and reliable speeds.
I also use Surfshark on my iPhone as it comes with an IProtator. This feature will seamlessly switch me to a new IP address every 10 minutes or so to avoid detection. Really useful if you want to strengthen your privacy.
I’ve tried PIA’s MACE, which is pretty good at blocking ads and malware. Would you say CleanWeb is comparable or better?
