What's the best VPN for iPhone?

Surfshark also has a GPS override feature that is crucial if you want to use a VPN to play games like Pokemon Go. The game has a detection algorithm that would notice unusual traffic if your GPS and IP address are different. With some VPNs, you need to download a separate GPS spoofing app, so this is just very convenient.

I was using Mulllvad’s iOS app a few months ago, and I found that it lacks some important security features. It doesn’t have a kill switch nor LAN blocking, which is why I stopped using it.

I wouldn’t say it’s a pitch, they’re providing great information.

I really hope they do get it right. That would be a game-changer, as I frequently travel to countries that restrict VPN usage. In this scenario, privacy is of utmost importance.

What kind of speeds were you getting with NordVPN vs ExpressVPN on your iPhone? Ideally I’d like a VPN that could give me over 500 Mbps.

I’ll be checking out Proton VPN as well.

I’ve used NordVPN, Surfshark, and Proton VPN. All are decent but I’ve had some hiccups with Proton… sometimes an unexpected disconnection for no reason or streaming services detecting I’m using a VPN (esp Prime Video). Never had these issues with Nord and Surfshark

I think that many people are actually put off by its price. It is very secure and provides solid speeds, but its Lightway protocol can’t really compare to WireGuard in terms of performance. There are simply much better alternatives imo, like NordVPN or Surfshark, that cost half the price.

Same here, not even considering a switch. I’m perfectly happy

Meshnet convinced me to make the switch from ExpressVPN to NordVPN too. It’s too fresh for gamers like me

The big downside is that it is based in the US, so it’s not the best for privacy. I’ve compared PIA with Surfshark and ProtonVPN, and it was much slower than both. I guess they’re still migrating onto 10Gbps servers.

What is your base speed? Even a good VPN will reduce your speed a bit (unless your ISP is slowing you down). With NordVPN, I get ~15% speed reduction.

ExpressVPN’s Lightway is okay, but in my experience, it’s just not as fast as WireGuard-based protocols like NordLynx or Surfshark’s implementation of WireGuard. I also don’t love that ExpressVPN limits you to 8 devices when other VPNs allow 10+ or even unlimited. For the price they charge, it should be more competitive

The more distant the server, the more the speed drop you’ll get. But top VPNs like Nord are really good at minimizing this. You can expect drops by the following order of magnitude:

  • Local/nearby servers: 1-10%
  • Mid-range servers (500-2000km): 8-20%
  • Distant servers (2000+ km): 15-50%
