What's the newest version of PIA for 2009 Mac Pro?

I had PIA (I do now know which version) installed on my 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 running El Capitan 10.11.6 (newest OS it will run). The PIA program told me than an update to 1.51 was available, so I hit “download” – it said download failed, then PIA stopped working all together.

I uninstalled PIA using AppCleaner like I always do, rebooted, and downloaded the newest 1.6 version. That won’t install (click on it and nothing happens) - but I thought that might be the case as that’s for OS 11.12+. Then tried 1.5.1, 1.5, 1.4 and none will install. Some do nothing when I double click on them. Others show me the usual ‘PIA is an application downloaded from the internet do you want to continue’ prompt, then after hitting OK nothing happens. And yes, I have the “Allow apps downloaded from anywhere” turned on.

Seems like I can only get v82 installed now. This is a much older version than I had before (I can tell by the UI), and when I click on “Upgrade” it brings me to the PIA website page where version 1.6 is which will not work on my computer… When I look at more older versions 1.4.0, 1.3.3, 1.3.2, etc. etc. they do NOT tell you what Mac OS they will work on so I’m a bit lost…

Any idea what version I should install? And is there a workaround if it’s one of the versions I’ve already tried to install which will not install no matter how many times I’ve tried? Last time I posted I was having problems with Ruby crashing on v81, and they might have given me a beta version which I can no longer find…

IF you using Mac OS 10.11.6, you will not be able to run the newest version of PIA. Here is a link: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/downloads

This page contains legacy versions of Private Internet Access. Please visit this page for the latest version.

Just went through a lot of this, if you have a 32-bit processor finding a client will be very hard, i recommend just using the built in option in the mac settings, even if it’s slow

Just use the native Mac VPN client and connect via PPTP.

Hi All,

This may be a little late, but will post in case it helps anyone.

I use a 2009 iMac running El Capitan and PIA. Version 1.2.1 of PIA released in June 2019 is the latest that will run on this OS. It works fine and I’ve never had an issue.

It can be downloaded here -

Cheers,
GR.

Hi Bradley, above I wrote how I tried 1.6, 1.5.1, 1.5, 1.4, 1.4.0, 1.3.3, and 1.3.2 and none would install.

Then I mentioned how the only one I could get working was v82 which was OLDER than what I had on the machine for almost an entire year now - and can’t find that version to install (thus asking what the newest version I should be using).

Then I also mentioned (if you take a look at my older topics in this Reddit) that I might have been on a beta version as well if that helps you diagnose this issue and help me find the version I was previously been on before it crashed and became unusable. Definitely need something WITHOUT Ruby as Ruby crashed a lot and left my computer unprotected.

2009 mac pro’s are 64 bit Intel processor - need 64 bit program I believe.

Your OS does not support 1.6, 1.5.1, 1.5, 1.4, 1.4.0, 1.3.3, and 1.3.2 . your Mac OS only supports v82 or older. We do not directly support the older versions so we are unable to assist as it is considered a legacy system both by PIA and Mac. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the info. How did I get a newer version running last time then (you can see the topic I created about it)? The version with the new graphical user interface with the dark gray/black background, with green circle for connect/disconnect? That was running just yesterday before it crashed (was fine for probably 9-12 months before that as well).

Does v82 still use Ruby? So it’ll crash on me on a pretty regular basis again, just like before?
