I love this browser and the GX. The thoughts running through my head are companies I work for are warning against its use. Saying its dangerous.
Did some research and yea there were indeed some sus dark times but Chrome is ten fold more dangerous then Opera. To date I’ve never had any issues or problems where I didn’t feel safe. I’ve also heard from a fellow alumni that universities tech teams are also outlawing it.
The universities are saying the free built in VPN isn’t safe. Colleges are treating it as if its the dark web or something. I understand Operas past but I also know that it’s not Operas fault. There’s another company behind the scenes they were doing the sus things back them.
I want to know everyone’s 2024 Era thoughts on this. Are companies and Universities just jealous or is there more to the iceberg that I don’t see?
Please excuse the grammar…
Saying its dangerous.
Partly true, depending on how you use it, it’s not a good browser to use. Maybe for simple browsing, but not using it for work related things. The data can be collected any time by the giant c word nation.
The universities are saying the free built in VPN isn’t safe.
It’s not a VPN, it’s a Proxy server which can be spied on. It’s not at all safe to use. Even for private browsing. Your data is logged and sold and can also be eyed on by the Giant C Nation.
The browser is okay and cool to use, but privacy wise, its way much worse than chrome.
Excluding the mircosoft crap, https://i.imgur.com/fAv5JOs.png opera pings homebase and other services with your info every quick moment. https://i.imgur.com/oULpTtx.png they also send your search keywords to their servers so they can see what you are doing and do what ever what they are doing like selling the info to advertisers.
You can “despy” the browser, but takes work and since the browser is DRM protected is also sketch. Even microsoft doesn’t DRM their browser.
I was thinking the same “why I didnt use Opera for years”. And I star installation and… well, I dint.
Im not saying Opera is the only one. But when Opera moved to Chromium based browser, they lost the point.
I hate only because of my flow issue
Opera is sus solely by the big chance of your data being possessed by the Chinese gov. That’s why even if I like using it, soon I will be changing to Firefox.
On the other hand, as Opera might be gathering some data you don’t want it to gather, Chrome does that for sure and people happily use it. It’s just sent to different companies / governments.
Opera is a subsidiary of Qihoo 360, which is a Chinese company. Their 360 Safety Guard is an “antivirus” software arguably having the most users in China. They also have their own 360 “Safe” Browser.
General Chinese users love them and don’t care why they are all free.

OK, let’s talk about Opera. What’s your question?
Hi,
You made many valid points based of many of the research I found. Maybe Opera in Norway will save up $$ and declare their independence from C-- Nation. I suppose Opera is as dark as well [torrent] I’ll be ok. This far no issues, but I will be taking some action soon in response to some of my research and the points you’ve shared here.
Yeah, I knew it wasn’t a VPN, but I wasn’t sure about the tech lingo of understanding for others, so I dubbed it down.
This topic is kinda suspicious, but let’s give you the benefit of the doubt
See https://blogs.opera.com/security/2023/07/debunking-spyware-misinformation/
Also sorry about all the drama… didn’t know it was a ya know… shitty topic. Seeing it down voted took the cake but I’m no snow flake so it’s all good.
Because they don’t like using a corpo browser, that’s why they chose other corpo browsers.
People hate on every product that competes with what they like. Duh? Are you like 12?
When you have literally a dozen different web browsers, all of them are going to get hate. That’s literally common sense.
but opera is under Norwegian jurisdiction. the same owner had also ann app called grinder which was banned in norway. what’s ur point. the china argument makes the same sense as calling manchester city an arabic soccer club, but it still plays in england
For me who neither live in U.S or China, I see no difference in terms of trustworthiness. FYI, Google is U.S. originated, and Google is a huge privacy snooper/leaker.
President Xi approves your comment
Well I made it pretty clear I was an end user of the product. But damn bite head off much?
dang, reading through these people are citing sources, giving actual opinions or sounding smart, then this guy appears and says what he says. may as well have not said anything, pointing out the obvious, everyone knows theres a million browsers out there and they all have their own good/bad. you dont need to tell us what we already know.
