After the boot sequence is complete and I’ve logged in, the Nord VPN connection screen pops up and requires me to click a button to connect? It’s a big map of the world.
Why is this? It seems really stupid that the VPN doesn’t function until I tell it what geographic port I want to connect to. How about the last one I selected? Or the one I selected every single time the last 100 times I booted up my PC? Or any random one at all would be better? Forcing me to take manual action every time I log in in order for the VPN to function seems more than just stupid, it seems counter-productive.
Is this some weird mental stimulus thing they’re going for? If Nord forces me to click on something then I’ll think I’m getting more value for my money or something?
Very frustrating and maybe 25% of the time I don’t even bother because it takes an extra 5 seconds to wait for the screen to populate.
Theres a feature called autoconnect…
I don’t have Nord set to start with Windows, but when I launch it, it auto connects to the server I have last selected. For me, I had to run some speedtest with the surrounding servers close to my area because I found that setting it to “fastest server” doesn’t always provide faster speeds. Look around in the settings, there should be an auto connect option.
One more option that might be appropriate is to use Windows instead of the Nord client. You have to use IKEv2 and you have basically a fixed server rather than dynamic connection, but you can grab a special username and password out of your Nord profile, and you don’t have to fuss with browser based logins or needing the app live to connect.

You may need to do one small fix that I found on Reddit if it doesn’t connect.
That sounds insanely sexy.
How would a simpleton like myself go about enabling it?
You’re the man, SmileyJones82. Thank you for taking the time to look through the UI and prompt me to look in the right place.
Thank you.
Settings > Connection > ‘Auto-Connect’ = ‘On all networks’.
Since the UI has changed in a recent update (a couple of months or so ago), the settings is on the very bottom left, then select Connection…VPN protocol Auto (Recommended), then Auto-connect I have set to all Networks, your options are Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Mobile. I have no trusted Wi-Fi networks, Quick Connect on the app launch is off (because I have a specific server chosen to connect to), and everything below those setting options are also off.
Go to settings and it should be there, I havent used the desktop apps much so idk exactly
You’re welcome. I’m on here to learn and to try my best to help others.
I believe Threat Protection is basically an ad blocker and protects you from accessing malicious sites and files. Personal preference on that setting, I thought I had it on, but it wasn’t. It may cause issues (as in not accessing a site) when trying to connect. Probably ok to have it on unless you can’t access a site you may have been on before. Kind of like having to temporarily disable Windows Real-time protection when downloading cracked files, otherwise Windows flags and quarantines the file.
There’s very few menu items in the UI and maximum effort seems to go into obfuscating what they are. Instead of using words there are mysterious hieroglyphs.
‘Threat Protection’ - Nothing in here about auto-connect.
‘Meshnet’ - No auo-connect.
‘Dark Web Monitor’ - Umm… anyway, no auto-connect.
The main UI has a few buttons that don’t have a hover-state but they appear to be an on/off button and a refresh button.
Nothing that I can find related to autoconnect.
It’s under settings/connection on Windows.
