‘I guess what everyone wants more than anything is to be loved.’ – Ella Fitzgerald. Since 1996, the Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival celebrates the music and life of the first lady of jazz. The festival brings the finest performers to Hampton Roads, and fosters Ella’s legacy by presenting community outreach and enrichment programs in addition to its world-class concert series.

Join us for Unhappy Hour at the Poe Museum! With a “Cask of Amontillado” theme setting the mood for revenge and suspense you can enjoy music in the Enchanted Garden. We will also have an Amontillado tasting and a fun “free Fortunato” game for the young and not as young alike!

This annual tradition dates back to 1878 and President Rutherford B. Hayes. Children ages 3 to 6 frolic on the South Lawn searching for more than 24,000 wooden eggs that have been hidden throughout the grounds. There is also an Easter celebration at the Ellipse including entertainment, music, storytelling and food giveaways for the whole family to enjoy.

The Strawberry Hill Races features some of the best steeplechase racing on the East Coast, with four races over hurdles and two on the flat. Central Virginia’s annual ‘rite of spring,’ the event is sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association and includes five races over jumps and on the flat with total purses and awards of over $70,000.

Shenandoah Valley’s Hot Glass Festival is the only festival in Virginia devoted entirely to glass artistry. Watch as glass artists from across the region demonstrate various hot glass techniques, including traditional glass blowing, sand casting, and bead making. See exhibits of the region’s finest blown glass and art glass beads and jewelry.
