Today I teach you guys how to bypass school filters with tor from Cydia to do things like go on Facebook, YouTube, surf the web, etc. from their native apps! No URL tricks or anything required. If set up correctly, it works perfectly!
Pros:
Applies only to Wi-Fi connections you want it to
Automatically applies! No need to enable/disable anything when you want to connect!
Surf the Web in ease from their native apps and not from some $10 iTunes app! This includes installing things from Cydia because it unblocks sources!
IZ FWEEEEE
Cons:
Noticeable but decently small impact on speed, but smaller impact than App Store filter-avoiding browsers!
Might not work all the time, about 90% success rate. Once you get it going it will work though
Google searches sometimes require you to put in a CAPTCHA because you’re on a proxy and it detects a lot of traffic. Not sure about other search engines. Websites work fine though
And now the steps!
Install tor from Cydia. It’s on the BigBoss repo for free. It will install all its dependencies with it, so just let it all install and then hit Return to Cydia.
Go to Settings and scroll down to Tor Settings. Open that and hit Enable. You can leave this enabled indefinitely because it will do nothing until you directly apply it to a connection.
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi. Connect to the Wi-Fi you wish to use this proxy on.
Hit the little i in a circle on the right of the Wi-Fi Network and scroll down to “HTTP Proxy”.
Hit “Auto” and type this into the field: “file:///etc/tor/proxy.pac” obviously without quotes. Then hit Return. Idk if Return does anything visually. I hit it just because.
You’re done! It should work now. If it doesn’t, try turning Wi-Fi off and back on again after a second. That’s been known to work. If it doesn’t work, keep trying.
I know this has been posted before but this hasn’t been brought up in a long time and I thought I’d remention it for those who don’t know this tip.
NOTE: Yes there are App Store apps that enable anonymous browsing. This method enables system-wide anonymity, something App Store apps cannot do.
Dude thank you so much. My school is very draconian when it comes to wifi, I’ve ran a few tests though external IP’s and I’ve seen that they route our traffic through 6 different server, 3 of which aren’t even in our state. They freak out and take phones away when staff passwords get leaked, and have even stopped giving the staff passwords to some teachers, my mom is a teacher in the district and can’t get it. Hopefully I can introduce some new people to the jailbreaking world and help them anonymize themselves on our school wifi now, and of course get around the blocks.
Can this method work on School Wi-Fi connections that require a login? Practically, my School’s Wi-Fi is guest/teacher only… Students cant do anything but stare at a landing page.
This will not work at all nor will VPN connections if your school already uses a proxy (on another port besides 80) and has all other ports closed. They can monitor and block anything that goes through the school proxy. Be warned.
Back when I was in school nothing was blocked on the internet. I remember a kid finding out that whitehouse(dot)com wasn’t exactly what he was looking for.
I think the best solution might be to run a VPN server at home, and connect to it through iOS’s built in VPN thingy.
They’d have to specifically block your home computer’s IP to stop you from connecting, which I doubt they’d do unless you attracted a bunch of attention.
But PrivateInternetAccess is cheap enough where it’s easier to just purchase a year’s worth and it’s there for your torrenting/public WiFi/school stuff. I rarely use mine, but it’s nice having it there.
Startpage I think it’s called. Or DuckDuckGo are good for Tor.
I know the desktop tor could be launched on a flash drive and bridged using an email but my school blocks emails and honestly has surveillance on everything. I can’t say much for a smartphone because apparently they have wifi in every room but no passwords for students? Logic anyone?
