I did some research and followed a few guides, namely this one, but I’m having major issues.
I have a gigabit ethernet connection. Right now I’m trying to torrent something with around 200 seeds and 350 connections total and I’m downloading at… 15 KB/s. Which is insanely slow.
On a different torrent, I seem to top out at about 1 mbps. Better, but still very slow compared to torrents not on a VPN.
Settings:
NordVPN -
VPN protocol set manually to OpenVPN (UDP) - I’ve also tried this with NordLynx too. NordLynx is faster but still overall less than 1 MB/s. Kill switch off, split tunneling off, custom DNS off.
Qbittorrent -
Protocol is TCP and uTP. Port is open and manually set to 61443. Use UPnP/NAT-PMP off. No proxy server set. Enable Local Peer Discovery disabled. Anonymous mode on. Network interface set to NordLynx in advanced options.
Windows settings -
Network properties set to only NordVPN LightWeight Firewall and Internet Protocol Version 4 for all ethernet connections and the NordLynx one too.
I’m at my wits end. Does anyone know what else I could do here? Am I being throttled or something?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Edit: I switched to Mullvad and the problem appears fixed! I am now getting 5+ MB/s. NordVPN is throttling traffic for torrents.
Pick a different P2P Server in your country or a near one
I haven’t used QBittorent in a while but try these setting under options if you haven’t already:
Under Speed: Untick: Apply rate limit to uTP protocol
Under Bit Torrent Tick: Enable DHT and Enable PeX
lol, had Nord for the longest time - thought 3Mb/s max down was normal.
It’s not.
I had this issue once with Nord I uninstalled/re-installed and the problem went away
I’ve been choosing one that is within 100 miles of me which is the closest. Others just get slower.
I’ve rebooted already after updating windows, and I’ve been connected to P2P servers this whole time. I don’t see any option for obfuscated servers though?
What VPN are you using instead?
What provider did you switch to?

Yup applied all those already!
Yea. Just got Mullvad and I’m seeing 5+ MB/s constantly.
I found another issue that was choking my speed, and that was that I had my upload limit set very low. Apparently qbittorrent chokes your speed if you do that. I took off the limit and now I get 15-30 MiB/s constantly!
Hmmm I’m not sure! I didn’t experience that issue. Are you using Qbittorrent? You’ll have to set your upload limits in the settings.
It’s a tick box choice in Settings/advanced
Did Nord throttle direct downloads? Bitport.io is a website that downloads torrents for you and then you can download the files directly.
I got Vypr - bailed on Nord with 18 months left on term - 10-12 Mb/s down when the torrent is strong. $60 for 3 years.
Or to be more accurate you were choking your download speed because your download torrents could not communicate ie. yes I have downloaded that part, now who another part
Hmm ok I tried that, but it took my speedtest from 900 Mbps to around 20 Mbps and terrible ping. So that’s a no-go.
Edit: I switched to Mullvad and the problem appears fixed! I am now getting 5+ MB/s. NordVPN is throttling traffic for torrents.
